Joshua, just wanted you to know that the link under "300.000 refugees" in the history above is presently not available - but oddly, two days ago, it was, sort of, with a blank page and a postscript that said that it was under the Yale auspices ....or something or the other - can't remember exactly what it said - am still looking for more info on these "300,000 refugees" to update this history - anybody have some info on this?

Yes, I have actually met someone from the PRC who confirmed the following "shock": "Yes, the girls cry; of course they cry. I heard that if they have to send a girl back, she might be tortured. Some of them are so frightened that it is as though they are in shock. All the way to the border, 60 kilometres, they stare ahead saying nothing.”
Thank you in advance for updating this - it remains to be seen what will transpire next - or will we, in fact, only ask ourselves on the day NK is opened (if that day will ever come), why didn't we do anything?

You're welcome, Joshua. I read your follow-up comment only this afternoon. Tukhachevsky is not my real name, just an Internet "handle". Actually, you are among the few you has recognized my "obscure reference to Soviet history". I was a Soviet studies major before my obsession with Korea.

Thank you for updating this article. I hope that one day (before or after liberation) it can grow into a book in print, or an e-book. Keep up the great work!

I really like this post. When I first read this, it actually gave me hope that perhaps the days of Kim's cult could be numbered indeed.

However, the more I think about it, I feel that NK will NOT become (very slowly) like China, but rather like another impoverished place in this very 'same' region called Burma.

Ok, so there will be more civil disobedience and occasional protests in NK but all of these will not cause regime change. Even Kim's death is no guarantee for regime change in NK. The real problem is NK's 80.000 people strong 'elite of elites' who - as far as we know - are still living a very good life in Pyongyang and beyond. Although NK seems to be extremely corrupt, this very elite is probably well monitored (and taken care of), which means that if nothing changes among them, nothing will change in NK. I am talking about the elite who frequents the banquet parties thrown at them where they are probably being reminded of how Ceaucescu and his cronies ultimately ended up. Very effective.

So in case Kim dies, we shouldn't be surprised, when a National Defence Commision will take over and continue 'to build a glorious nation' in Kim's name. A Defence Commision keeping a close eye on its fellow cronies making sure everything stays the same.

Just like Burma.

Can They Do It? A Brief History of Resistance to the North Korean Regime

[...] The Korea liberator has a very interesting update entitled Can They Do It? A Brief History of Resistance to the North Korean Regime. It documents many instances of near-revolt and upheaval in North Korea, and makes one wonder about the level of resistance that currently exists. Can the people overthrow the regime? I doubt they can when the military is well-armed and well-fed and the people are starving.. Joshua - This is an excellent report on the resistance. Great job.

As always, Joshue is doing an impeccable job doing research and provide readers with a lot of info - to which I can only applaud.

However, Jasper Becker's recent book 'Rogue State...' is cited here frequently. Unfortunately this book does depend on a lot of hearsay from defectors, and certain stories cannot be confirmed to be true as many citations are missing. However, there are still plenty of other sources quoted which inspires hope that some day the world gets rid of this despicable regime called the 'DPRK'.

How about leafleting by aircraft? How about corrupting North Korean border guards with money and gifts (on the Chinese border). I can think of so many things that we should be doing.

COMMENT:

I've thought of that:

The goal shouldn't just be to get information into the hands of the people, it should be to weaken the regime by overloading North Korea's security apparatus, its finances, and its infrastructure.

Joshua, I fully agree with you. Let them run around chasing leaflets and executing corrupt border guards - its creates more distance between the regime and the people. Also, smuggle in weapons that are useful against North Korean police and military, but not useful in a war against the US (like small firearms). This will make incidents like the ones you describe much more painful for the regime. The important thing is that the regimes monopoly on violence is challenged.
