[...] You can find contacts for several Lao Embassies here. And of course, this is only the latest example of South Korea’s “die in place” policy toward North Korean refugees. Does anyone know what ever happened to this refugee protection bill in the National Assembly?
[...] * Matters of Life and Death. The Chosun Ilbo reports that Lao authorities have arrested six North Korean women. I’m not sure if it’s the same group I mentioned here. Meanwhile, 53 others are still in imminent danger of being sent back from Thailand. If you haven’t already done so, please contact the Thai Embassy and tell them not to send these refugees back to the gulag. Recent reports suggest that North Korea is imposing especially harsh punishments on repatriated refugees. It only takes a few minutes to send an e-mail. Consider the stakes. Thank you.
[...] Make your voices heard to the Thai and Laotian Embassies around that you object to their refugee policy. While you are at it, make a call to the US and South Korean embassy in Thailand to stop sitting on their hands on this issue. Filed under: North Korea | 3:11 pm [...]

[...] I have been unable to find any English language articles on the Chosun Ilbo site about the South Korean government’s refusal to step in and save a group of North Korean refugees who have been captured in Thailand and Laos. Since the South Korean embassy is not trying to claim the refugees, they will likely be sent back to North Korea, where they will face certain torture and imprisonment (or execution). One Free Korea has information on people you can write to and complain about this situation. Maybe somebody should also write to the Chosun Ilbo and tell them to stop wasting their time with petty editorials in which they bash the morality of the entire Japanese nation, and instead spread the word about this outrage in Southeast Asia.
This is the unfortunate result of international law becoming the hostage of tribalism. It becomes meaningless.
