PAY TRIBUTE TO THE KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL AT

            ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY

Dear Mr. President Myung Bak Lee:

pay tribute to the Korean War Memorial at the Arlington National Cemetery

We welcome President Myung Bak Lee’s visit to the United States.

Please let me allow expressing my personal feelings in this historic occasion.

Among your diplomatic schedules, it will be a memorable event if you could have a chance to pay tribute to the Korean War Memorial at the Arlington National Cemetery. The monuments vividly express the sadness and hardships of the soldiers at the front line during the Korean War. The Koreans owe very much to their brave sacrifices. Otherwise we can never have today’s prosperity of Korea.

On July 27, 1995, Pres Bill Clinton and Young Sam Kim made dedication speeches for the Korean Memorial.

It is a fine moment for Mr. President to appreciate the memorial and say thanks to the Americans, those soldiers and their families who sacrificed for the Korean people. At the same time, you could say thanks to those UN solders fought for the war. It could be an exceedingly happy and diplomatic fine point for your visit to this friendly nation. Thus, you could demonstrate the prestige of the Republic of Korea to the world

Also you could negotiate with the American government if South Korea, USA and North Korea to establish a kind of the postal services. If so, The Koreans and many people of good will could send proper relief materials to the starving North Koreans – clothes, dry foods, such as rice, noodle, La myun, especially school supplies, papers, crayons, pencils - to the school children that could enhance the friendly relations which could help to fulfill a peaceful re-unification.

The packages could be allowed to be sent to any known or unknown, nostalgic individual’s addresses or to the towns if the refugees in South do not have any family connections at all in North. An unimaginable amount of relief goods could reach to our starving brothers and sisters in the workers’ paradise.

Most of all, first, South must win the hearts of North Koreans in order to recover the North Korean territory which is unlikely to be an easy task because of the Chinese and Russian connections.

May God bless you.

Sincerely yours,

[...] Lee Myung Bak, the current front-runner, has all of Park’s bad qualities and none of her good ones.  Several years ago, I wrote this profile of Lee Myung-Bak and described his Stalinist-sounding public-works schemes, his poor track record for ethics in government, and his tendency to say adolescent or zany things.  Who can forget the time when, as mayor, he offered the city of Seoul to Jesus Christ, despite the fact that Seoul’s population must be nearly half Buddhist?  Lee still hasn’t dropped the idea of building a canal through the mountainous spine of a peninsula ringed with excellent, modern ports.  Since then, Lee M.B. has been running to outdo Chung Dong-Young on the amount of the taxpayers’ largesse he would funnel to Kim Jong Il.  (Yes, this is what passes for “conservative” in today’s Korea.)  Lee M.B. has proposed a new industrial park to harness North Korean slave labor.  Much sillier is his idea of raising North Korea’s per capita income to $3,000.  Only a fool can doubt where the vast majority of this wealth would end up:  aimed at Seoul and Osaka, ticking on the wrists of Pyongyang bureaucrats, and flushed down the urinals of this palace.  Either Lee M.B. (a) doubts that, and you can complete the syllogism yourself, or (b) he’s being deliberately insincere to get votes.  I prefer Theory (b), but neither option should give Korean voters much comfort.  And now, he finds himself immersed in a stock-manipulation scandal.  Question the timing if you will.  Like last-minute candidacies, last-minute prosecutions are a fact of Korean political life.
I think the big advantage she has over Lee is her personal stability and gravitas. I'm getting this from a number of people who have met Park (including the discussion we had over lunch during your visit). Lee has that spooky "frustrated artist" vision that has always worked out so badly for everyone involved. On the other hand, and based on my limited information, I read Park as unimaginative, dull, rudderless, reactionary, and driven almost exclusively by ambition.

Park Geun-hye is starting to look good. I'll take her slow boat to China over Lee's slave island any day of the week.

With the current help she is getting from Roh & company, it looks like she might just get the GNP nomination. Of course, they are only doing that because they think she would be easier to beat in the general election

We need some candidate able to channel the spirit of Park Chung-hee.

On, “going the extra mile,” it is a welcomed bit of political capital; we’ll see how well he spending it with things fall apart over HEU (or maybe something even before that).
