[...] [OFK: This post is a follow-up Q&A to my review of Professor Andrei Lankov’s new book, “North of the DMZ.” Prof. Lankov is a lecturer at the Australian National University, now on leave and teaching at Kookmin University. You see more of Prof. Lankov’s books here, and you can find plenty more of his work linked on this blog. Two of his more notable recent articles include “The Natural Death of North Korean Stalinism” and “How to Topple Kim Jong Il.”] [...]

I was looking forward to reading this review, though I still haven't bought the book and probably won't...yet.

Essentially I want the impossible which is reading about the daily life of N-Koreans outside Pyongyang. Perhaps the Q&A with Lankov might give me a possible reason to still order, but yet not sure.
I think it would be fascinating to read about the countryside where not only living conditions are likely to be substandard compared to Pyongyang, but also, since probably more of the 'less-desirables' live there, how their 'lower songbun' translates into practical daily life.
I am not solliciting for a response, just thought to share my view.

I'll live to be 87.1. As this must be true, I've a few years to go to get to the middle.

When you're 40, you've officially reached middle age. Sorry! Doesn't mean you necessarily look like it, it just means you're there.

The answer to your next question is "39."

I will certainly have to get this book soon. Andrei Lankov is largely responsible for my interest in North Korea when I happened to stumble upon his writings on NKZone a few years ago. It is a fascination that continues to this day. I can't thank Mr. Lankov enough - I would spend many a day reading his anotherKorea postings over and over again.

<i>"...the affable, funny, middle-aged professor..."</i>

I think Dr. Lankov is a year or two older than I. Middle-aged? Ouch! Wait'll you hit the big 4-0 in a few years, and we'll see how you define middle age.

I'm working on reading the book now and yes it is an excellent book if you are interested in getting a deeper understanding of North Korea.
