[...] This is also very revealing in another way Rice must not have intended. It’s true, of course, that too many people have no idea who Lefkowitz is, which is no accident. His disappearance has been so conspicuous that Christopher Hitchens recently asked what happened to him.  That’s because since day one, Lefkowitz has been surrounded by State Department loyalists who’ve watched his every move and muzzled him. When Rice let Christopher Hill sign his worthless piece of paper with the North Koreans, she moved Lefkowitz to the basement office next to this guy.  Now that her lousy deal has fallen apart, Rice is feeling prickly, defensive, and besieged by common sense.
[...] Now that we’ve asked North Korea to tell us about its nuclear programs, and now that North Korea has answered by telling us to perform prostate exams on ourselves, I suppose it’s best if we at least pretend to do otherwise. Not that the pretense is a convincing one. When Chris Hill tells us to react “with patience and perseverance,” understand that translating this into the North Korean dialect yields something that also means, “How about never? Is never good for you? Me too. I’ll cable Washington.” [...]

The quote didn't make it in the last comment. It should have started with:
"“Sometimes it moves in what some might consider tectonic or glacial fashion,” McCormack said. “But it does – it does move forward.”"

<blockquote cite="“Sometimes it moves in what some might consider tectonic or glacial fashion,” McCormack said. “But it does – it does move forward.”"></blockquote>
That's all we need to know.
That is a certain mind-set that has been around for a long time, and I guess all we really need to know is if the president agrees with it, because we know how it goes by now.
Depressing...

At least in the 1990s, we could say that millions were starving to death and humanitarian assistance was needed, but we don't have the famine now to ease our conscience.

The bottom line is thus more visible: we prefer the Kim Jong Il regime we know to the unknowns of a collapse.....

[...] OFK’s Joshua, with some fancy keywork and must-read links, has reached the depressing conclusion Left Flank did already, but with much more rending and gnashing: …we haven’t paid enough. On the “disablement” of the already used-up Yongbyon reactor, there seem to be legitimate technical reasons why disablement has slowed down, but North Korea is also deliberately slowing things down.
In the <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Big_lie" rel="nofollow">big lie</a> there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily.

[...] As usual, Joshua has an interesting commentary on the collapsed framework 2.0 and how Kim Jong Il plays everybody like a flute. There is really no reason for me to comment further. The posting speaks for itself. Also see Richardson’s posting.
