[...] The regime’s reaction to the rising chaos is predictably ruthless: shooting corrupt officials, shooting refugees, and shooting people who try to cross the border into China in search of food (see Sonagi’s post at TMH and the North Korea Monitor). That is a change. In the recent past, the regime had been relatively lenient in the punishment of those who crossed the border temporarily to trade or earn money to bring home. The regime has obviously decided that border-crossing for any reason is a threat to its survival, so examples must be set: “It has become a daily routine for a few residents to disappear and illegally cross the border to visit relatives in China,” he is reported as saying. “We shot them to send a warning to people over this.” [Good Friends, via the BBC] [...]

[...] This Despite their suspicions (and they had plenty of reason to be suspicious), South Korean authorities didn’t interrogate any of the group members individually. It seems there were enough red flags to indicate this wasn’t a run-of-the-mill lost-at-sea incident. [...]

[...] According to the South Korean constitution, these 22 are considered ROK citizens. Wouldn’t the choice of whether to stay in the south belong to the 22 Koreans? You can read the gruesome details of their fate in OFK post. It is becoming less of a case of negligence and more of a deliberate action to send the drifters back to the North. [...]

[...] The assumption here is that in order to be a good unification minister, you must be optimistic about North Korea. What has ten years of “optimistic unification ministers” brought the world? Let’s see, North Korea has a nuclear bomb, Kim Jong Il’s lease on his political life has been renewed many times over, the North continues to humiliate the South at every turn, and North Korea is every bit as repressive and uncooperative as ever. Oh, yeah, and the North Korean people are worse off than ever before. Just ask the 22 fishermen who drifted into South Korean waters only to be returned to the bosom of the Fatherly Leader by Noh and company. That’s right, you can’t. They’ve been executed.
The South Korean government has blood on its hands -- this is disgraceful to allow these people to return to a certain death.

The shameful ingrates in the South, aided and abetted by leftist professors and students and media, want the US out of Korea, not realizing that Kim Jun Il is waiting for exactly that -- wake up South Korea, your freedom was bout and paid for at a high price.

Having lived for decades in the Pacific Northwest and done my share of clamming and gathering oysters, I am puzzled as to why people were in boats to dig clams and gather oysters? These sea creatures are gotten during low tides, usually by digging. If indeed they were after clams and oysters, what were they doing in boats?? Definitely smells like tide flats during low tide at high noon to me.....

Would the timing of this execution have anything to do with the Big Cheese's recent birthday? The article gives the date of their landing at Yeonpyeong Island but not how long their interrogations were or when they were sent back.
