[...] The Chosun Ilbo producers were apparently aware of this documentary’s political implications, enough so that they paid a visit to Capitol Hill. I have a friend there who saw part of the video and spoke with someone involved in the production. My friend is a reliable source, but of course, this information is third-hand. The video, taken on the border just last fall, shows both human trafficking and drug smuggling. The documentary’s release was time so that it would not appear until after the South Korean election and the inauguration of the new President. Apparently, the Chosun didn’t want to be accused of trying to influence the presidential election. They were also worried about hearing from the friendly folks in the Ministry of Culture, possibly the same friendly folks who allegedly reached out to the producers of Yoduk Story.
[...] After I wrote here recently about North Korea’s growing meth problem, it occurred to me that I talked about how, as a prosecutor, I learned about how awful meth really is. I spent just shy of two years of my Army time assigned to Ft. Irwin, California, home of the OPFOR. During most of that time, I was the prosecutor, or Trial Counsel. Irwin is a great place to drive a T-72, shoot AK’s, or go out on field exercises to launch mock raids on “Blue Force” units. With typical summer temperatures over at 100 degrees, it is not a good place for strenuous outdoor activity, nor is a good place to be a single guy. [...]

There's going to have to be a transition period during which both internal and cross-border migration will have to be controlled. Even some North Korean defectors will tell you that.

A drug-addicted, desperately poor population with public health problems (tuberculosis, malnutrition, AIDS) is not something <b><i>I</i></b> relishing on the safe streets of Seoul. I'm really hoping the border can be maintained, even if the regime is transformed.

What bothers me most is that the end result is still going to be collapse. At most, our gutter policy just delays the inevitable. It's beyond sad...

[...] Today, there is too much evidence to deny that North Korea’s drug problem is serious and growing, and that it threatens the country’s social and political stability. A series of alarming reports in the Daily NK paints a bleak picture of abuse of opiates, including heroin, but especially of a form of methampetamine the North Koreans call “bingdu” or “philopon.” [One Free Korea] [...]

Which really just shows that the longer we delay the inevitable, the greater our problems. I can think of a slew of problems we still don't face in rebuilding North Korea, but eventually might: HIV, loose nukes, banditry, and widespread heroin addiction to name just a few. The opacity of North Korea's lock on information about places beyond Pyongyang conceals just how much decay there really is. If you want to see the extent of the contrast between P'yang and the rest of the country, start with Google Earth.

<blockquote cite="may have accounted for as much as half of North Korea’s exports in the late 1990s but has fallen to roughly 15 percent in recent years due to sanctions."></blockquote>

Which is most likely why the Bush admin flipflopped on the North: too many people cannot stand to think about "what if" the North were to collapse.

In the end, we have clearly seen the US is unwilling to deal with that situation and has opted for Sunshine-lite.
