If you think we're too sanguine now, wait til an Obama administration adopts our own version of Sunshine Policy. "Be nice" diplomacy was tried before - 1977-1981 - with disastrous results. Jimmy Carter is still travelling the world appeasing despots with unauthorized engagements and brokering sell-outs disguised as peace talks with entities our government and its allies have made a principled stand against. That is precisely the kind of diplomacy and foreign policy Obama is proposing. He will learn, as will this generation of voters, that the world can be a dangerous place and that for every carrot there must also be an intimidating, credible stick.

The South Koreans will also be chagrinned when they realize there is no teeth to the Yankee support for deterrence under an Obama administration. There is a reason the KJI cult favors an Obama presidency.

In a discussion class I asked a group of Koreans about the lack of agitated response against the Chinese.

They said: China is looked upon as a gangster. The USA is seen
as a principled policeman. In Asia -- a criminal is unpredictable and dangerous. A good policeman has restraint. It's safer to harass the principled policeman.

One Korean woman said this attitude is also involved : Me against my brother; my brother and I against my cousin; My cousin and I against the other village.

Well hopefully the ROK government understands that the U.S. giving promiscuous apologies to Korea does not mean it feels inferior or subservent in any way to it. Interesting difference in cultural views of apologies though if true.
