It was more then just labor union types out there protesting the leaflets. Hanchongryun and the other usual suspects were involved in the violence as well:

I think the leaflet activists should call in the retired ROK Marine Corps officer association for security during their next leaflet operation. They would love to bash heads with these leftist thugs.

This certainly supports your argument that the regime sees these leaflets as a real threat.

I find it interesting that the Army has been mobilized to intercept the gathering of the leaflets before the population gets them - and you know that the Soldiers are reading them - at least the headlines. The INTEL analysts are scrubbing them top to bottom.

This may actually be better than the powerless masses getting the message. It could create all kinds of rumors and speculation among the military members. That could lead to a crisis of confidence in the regime and the military leadership. Maybe.

Soldiers are citizens, too. I commend Joshua on his 2004 prophetic speculation - and I concur that these very things could be happening.

I think the KWP is very worried about the balloon campaign. And rightly so.

The Voice of America article I read headlined the counter group as a "peace group"...

It did later on label them as "pro-North" - and the article wasn't horribly off-base, but it was significantly off.

Anyway, One Free Korea (and others) can help me here:

These leaflet drops did sometimes go on under Pres. Roh, right?

Is 2008 the first year recently? I don't think so.... Did they increase this year in a massive way?

I am trying to gauge North Korea's response....

If the leaflet drops haven't increased in a fairly significant way this year, then we need to consider what it means that Pyongyang is screaming so much about them.

It could mean the rumors about Kim's health putting him out of office are true --- that the regime is reacting more to the drops because they are very worried about regime survival.

It could mean the leaflets were having a greater impact than the regime expected.

If drops have increased significantly, it could mean they are having a greater impact enough to worry the regime.

---- It could also mean more in the other direction that the regime is posturing now that Lee is in office.

Has South Korea under Lee seriously cut off the amount of goodies that was previously flowing?

It doesn't seem that way to me - but I haven't been looking that closely. (And unless Roh had a fair amount of secret flows into the North.....a possibility....)

It seems to me NK is hurting itself more by its moves against Kaesong and the mt. tours than what Lee has cut off so far.

That leads me to believe North Korea's moves against those projects, and even its screams at the leaflets, is more about prepping 6 party talks and the Lee administration and the upcoming US administration (which NK wasn't sure would be like before the election when the leaflet cries were first heard so loudly).

???

The amount of material wealth - in country that must preserve all it has - the North seems to be using up to get at these leaflets would certainly seem to indicate this isn't simply negotiating rhetoric....

....I'm not sure how significant it is though.....There are so many factors to look at.

Is it the leaflet influence? Is it worries on Kim's health? Is it worsening quality of life (food) issues in the countryside? Is it posturing?

Time will tell....

This is such great news that non lethal means (or at least to non North Koreans as I'm sure any NK getting caught with these are going straight to the gulag....) are really getting the Party's panties bunched up.

This is causing so much furor and such media in the rest of the world.

I hope that guy Park gets nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

I am unsure about the credibility of this website, but I hope the NK government web surfers report this one to their bosses.

This continues to be big news in South Korea. This morning (12/4) I happened to see part of the 8:30 news on MBC -- they led off with a 3-4 minute piece about all this. After that I flipped over to KBS and caught their maybe two-minute story. Yesterday for the first time in my life I bought a copy of the Hankyoreh, because it had a photo on the top of the front page of the balloon launches, with a related story inside the fold.
