China Let North Korea Go Nuclear, and We Should Let Taiwan Go Nuclear

I contrast China’s bitching about arms sales to Taiwan with China’s own woeful non-enforcement of UNSCR 1718 and 1874 here, at The New Ledger.

Welcome, Chi-bots!

  1. It’s a nice thought.

But the people of Taiwan are divided and irresolute, and their current President seems to aspire to the post of provincial governor. I doubt they would do it, even with our encouragement. Frankly, I’m surprised they’re still buying any weapons at all.

  2. Are you writing to your congressman representing your district?

I am actually for nukes for everyone. It is not fair that only a handful of countries like the US, Russia, China, India, Israel etc. are allowed to have nukes and the others can’t. Yes to Nuclear Taiwan Province!

  3. How about nuclear one and only elected legitimate Korean government?

Elsewhere, the “road to Ceausescuville”…You coined it. Allow me to use it, with proper attribution, of course.

  4. Thanks for recognizing Taiwan Province as part of China. ROC all the way!

How is the PRC not legitimate? Legitimacy is not determined by the mere existence of elections. Who elected the British head of state, the queen by the way? Can you say her government or her reign is not legitimate?

Do tell, why is that China is allowed to have nukes, the DPRK and Japan are not? Why is that Israel is allowed to have nukes while Iran is not?

  5. The leadership of the DPRK and Iran are insane. I’ll pass on Kim Jong Il and holy war Jihadists having WMDs, thanks.

Japan is “not allowed” to have nukes because they have firsthand experience of the horrors of nuclear war, and there is a significant degree of anti-nuclear sentiment in Japan. Plus, they can rely on the United States to defend them if attacked, so why waste money on a defense program? It’s kinda along the same lines as to why the German government has outlawed domestic printing of “Mein Kampf”.

  6. 1. Sure thing – I recognize all of China’s mainland as part of the Republic of China, even if it is temporarily occupied by thugs who only cling to power by machine-gunning students, spying on chatrooms, and arresting old ladies for meditating. You define that as legitimacy because you have no other choice, but I’m guessing that’s not a system under which you’d want to live yourself. After all, here, you’re free to be an outspoken advocate for the idea that others should live in slavery.

    2. One of the most interesting points about your own hypocrisy is that you’re using an anonymizing proxy server that claims you’re writing in from a corporate headquarters Boston (I won’t name the company) and gives an IP that doesn’t match your comment IP. You shill for the ChiComs, but you’re still afraid of people finding out who you are. I’m free to write under my own name.

    3. China was only “allowed” nukes under the NPT because it was too late to take them away by the time they tested one. I don’t doubt that nukes falling into the hands of a mass-murdering psychopath like Mao was a prime inspiration for the NPT. Better that Taiwan should have nukes than Mao or Kim Jong Il. Thank you for agreeing with me that Taiwan should have nukes.

    4. The Queen is in charge of England again? I can picture Oliver Cromwell and Gordon Brown rolling over in their graves!

  7. Andrew,

Are KJI and Ahmadinejad necessarily more dangerous, more prone to unleashing violence on other people? I don’t know. The leader of the free world, aka the US of A invaded more countries than KJI’s DPRK and Ahmadinejad’s Iran combined. And do you think the world is any safer for people like that civilian-butcher Netanyahu to have nukes?

    JS,

Seriously I am asking you, who and what determines legitimacy? Was the Nazi regime legitimate? After all it was elected by the German people, albeit in a crooked way. You certainly have a lot of problems with China, that’s OK and only natural (consider where you are coming from on issues and your suffocating self-righteousness), but how does your disapproval make the Chinese government illegitimate?

Why do you keep having problem with me commenting under my moniker? A lot of people do. Why should I have to reveal who I am to you, or anyone? I am certainly a nobody. Do you have a problem with who I am or with my opinion? I bet even your son who beat you in chess doesn’t do this sort of petty personal attacks.

Nobody, certainly not countries like the US or China, not even the UN should determine who should have nukes and who should not. Once again, why should only a handful of countries are allowed to have nukes? Are any of those nuclear powers (US, Russia, China, France, the UK, India, Pakistan, Israel) any less malicious and dangerous than the rest of the world?

Is the queen not the head of the state? Is her reign legitimate or not?

  8. Seriously I am asking you, who and what determines legitimacy?

Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, not by having the keys to the helicopter gunships.

The Nazis never won a majority of the vote, they leveraged a plurality of the vote into a majority coalition in the Reichstag, rammed through the Enabling Acts, and never submitted to the will of the voters again. The people didn’t elect Hu Jintao, and they certainly didn’t elect you to be their proxy and argue that they shouldn’t be free to speak for themselves.

Why do you keep having problem with me commenting under my moniker? A lot of people do.

That would tell you something if only you had the self-awareness to see it.

P.S.: The next time you bring my family into a discussion will be your last comment here.

  9. “Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, not by having the keys to the helicopter gunships. ”

And what indicates “consent of the governed”? Opinion polls? Approval rating? Democratic elections? Can you say those pre-democracy states were therefore not legitimate? And if were to trust the PEW research center who did a survey/study a few years ago which showed some 87% the Chinese surveyed were pretty happy about the state of the nation/the direction in which the country is heading, does that not indicate “consent of the governed”?

“they certainly didn’t elect you to be their proxy and argue that they shouldn’t be free to speak for themselves”

When did I ever proclaim that I am a proxy of the Chinese government and I speak for the Chinese? I speak for myself and myself only and that is not OK with you? You just can’t get over the notion that there are some free-willed individuals out there who are not affliated with the states and governments you hate and they happen to disagree with your naive and black-n-white assessment of the world, can you? If I don’t agree with your simple-minded and biased view of China then I must be a proxy of the Chinese government, right? If one is critical of the Israeli government policies he/she must be a vile anti-semite, right? You see how absurd you are?

BTW, that was meant to be a genuine compliment for your son.

  10. Why is Taiwan Chinese? Because Chinese started settling there in the 17th century. The aboriginal Taiwanese, reduced to 2% of the population, are mostly Austronesian, i.e. cousins of the majority groups in Indonesia and the Philippines, and of the aboriginal Hawaiians. The Chinese took Taiwan, just like they took Xianjang and Tibet.

  11. If I don’t agree with your simple-minded and biased view of China then I must be a proxy of the Chinese government, right? If one is critical of the Israeli government policies he/she must be a vile anti-semite, right? You see how absurd you are?

Defending communism which has failed in every place in every way is the definition of absurdity. Criticizing Israel for its self-defense exposes you as a pro-tyranny ideologue. Joshua contends for the plight of the impoverished, oppressed, tormented people of North Korea. He is an exemplary humanitarian in many ways and anyone who defends Mao, Kim Il Sung, Marx or their modern proponents deserves the scorn and denunciation of liberty-loving, God-fearing people everywhere.

  12. Criticizing Israel for its self-defense exposes you as a pro-tyranny ideologue

I don’t want to open a worm hole of a conversation here, but that’s a sweeping and irrational generalisation. Even this blog has seen Israel criticised some.

  13. “And if were to trust the PEW research center who did a survey/study a few years ago which showed some 87% the Chinese surveyed were pretty happy about the state of the nation/the direction in which the country is heading, does that not indicate “consent of the governed”? “

The answer is no, no, and no. I would not trust the results of any survey of Chinese people’s opinions regarding the government, not even by the respected PEW. Complaining about corrupt local government officials is tolerated at best. Criticism of the top leadership won’t last more than 2 minutes on Sina before being deleted for the sake of 和谐社会 (a harmonious society). I’m surprised that 13% of Chinese surveyed admitted to a stranger that they weren’t satisfied.
