We need to call China but a Chinese name name that doesn’t let Beijing listen to us calling it the Center of the Civilized World. You know, since it isn’t.

Did the real Oranckay really write that? That suggestion belongs in the same dogpile as hackneyed complaints about the US hogging the name of two continents. 中国就是中国.

Who knew money matters could elicit anything more dramatic than a yawn? I would tend to agree with Joshua here, that Lee is clearly partisan. Still, with so much support coming from Beijing, sanctions will only weaken the US position against the DPRK. The most credible signal to Pyongyang comes through Seoul. Bowing to wimpy conservative fears in the ROK of their own impotence and impoverishment if the US ever changed OPCON rules is not a firm signal to the North Koreans, that the US is in control of its own Korea policies. Convincing Seoul to end conscription, reorganizing its military, and modernizing it would send a louder signal, especially if USFK withdrew in stages. Financial sanctions might seem easier to pull off, but the whole effort is undermined if the US can't get Seoul or Tokyo to do anything either. The US can't foster responsibility in China if it's constantly listening to the wimpy conservatives in both Seoul and Tokyo fret over what they can't do for free with the US: get free military protection and access to markets without having to be accountable for their own crimes.

I can't say anything about the above that you've not already thought of, so here's some thoughts what you wrote reminded me of....

I think it's time to stop calling China the Middle Kingdom (中國, lit. "center country") in Chinese. Korean and Japanese do that in regular speech, and the US and the rest of the world calls it this name of China's sinocentric making in Chinese language documents as well. It's like me making up a name that means "your royal highness" and you readily agreeing to refer to me that way without realizing what you're doing. We need to call China but a Chinese name name that doesn't let Beijing listen to us calling it the Center of the Civilized World. You know, since it isn't.

I never knew the china matters guy and Peter Lee were one and the same, but it makes sense. He stakes out some very odd positions in the Asia Times.
