The Death of an Alliance, Part 38: Chairman Lee’s Little Red Book of Quotations

[Update and Clarification: Non-geek readers with lives may not realize that Lee Jong-Seok is actually South Korea’s Minister of Unification. One reader reasonably assumed that he was a North Korean, which is certainly an understandable assumption, based on some of the things Lee has been saying this week.]

“[Kim Jong Il is] one of the figures in the North we can get [an] agreement from and who can make proper decisions. . . . The two [Kim and South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun] could produce significant results since Pyongyang is well aware that President Roh is a decisive man who is able to see the big picture, and Kim is always being portrayed as broad-minded in the North Korean media.”

UniFiction Minister Lee Jong-Seok

Relax. He’s probably just being diplomatic.

“The Bush administration of the U.S. is fundamentalist in nature, and it has been raising questions about drugs and human rights abuses since it took office.”

UniFiction Minister Lee Jong-Seok

“It is a unilateral and narrow-minded thought as well as anti-humanitarian and inhumane attitude to talk about North Korean human rights issue on one hand and turn a blind eye to the dire situation facing the North Korean residents on the other hand.”

UniFiction Ministry statement

OK, then!

Am I missing something? NK is being diplomatic, but when we state the truth as everyone in the world knows it be, we are unilateral? Okay. I’ll take that honor!

Shame on NK! They need to shut down the gulags, and feed their people. If not, at least let them go!

How are you doing? I pray you are well. Have a great day.

I should have been clearer. Lee Jong-Seok is SOUTH Korea’s Minister of Unification. Things have gotten to the point where you can’t tell.

[…] With the Kaesong project now in crisis and creating a widening rift with the United States, the UniFiction Minister has hurriedly scheduled a visit to the industrial park and sent his minions out to assuage the world’s rising concerns. Instead, they make more material for me: Officials at the Unification Ministry, which handles Seoul’s policy toward Pyongyang, hit back at Lefkowitz’s criticism, saying it was misplaced. […]

The Death of an Alliance, Part 38: Chairman Lee’s Little Red Book of Quotations

[…] 2. Caution. South Korea is tamping down any speculation or expectations that could destabilize already negative public opinion trends less than two weeks before an election. They still don’t know the details, which goes far to explain why Chris Hill is on the way to talk to them out of Dick Cheney’s earshot. I’d expect some of the dumb things South Korean politicians have been saying recently will also come up, plus South Korea’s best efforts to remove all motives for North Korea to compromise or respect the sovereignty of other nations: [M]any top officials have all but given up hope that North Korea’s government will either disarm or collapse during Mr. Bush’s remaining time in office. Increasingly, they blame two of Mr. Bush’s negotiating partners, South Korea and China, which have poured aid into North Korea even while the United States has tried to cut off its major sources of revenue.
