The People Who Did This Obviously Don’t Need More Weapons
If cynical European mercantilism has ever hit a greater low than lifting its arms embargo on Beijing in spite of considerable deteriorations in China’s human rights record over the last several years, well . . . perhaps it was its corruption of the United Nations so that it could keep arming and trading with Saddam Hussein (admittedly, it’s never hard to corrupt an institution without standards).
It’s absolutely stunning that some would have us believe that Europe, and particularly France–which even today (extremely graphic video!) is a ruthless colonialist with the morals of a crack whore er, sorry, I mean a French statesman–is the torchbearer of international law and the conferrer of legitimacy. If this is law, it’s the law of the almighty Euro . . . and of the jungle. Sadly enough, Britain has behaved shamefully, too, by supporting and defending this decision. And the result? A new arms race in East Asia, as Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, India, and Vietnam all seek to maintain military parity with China. It will also further dissolve the bonds of NATO, as America becomes more guarded with its technology transfers to Europe. Ultimately, it could embolden China to grab and enslave Taiwan, perhaps triggering war with the United States.
Sleep well, Jacques.
