Yet Another Defection by Sea
“Two men came South; one has clearly expressed the intention to defect while the other is asking to be returned to North Korea,” South Korean authorities said Wednesday. The government is reportedly involved in inter-ministerial talks over what to do with the two and their boat. Another government official said North Korea wants both men and their boat returned.
This is the third time this year that North Koreans have come South braving the West Sea in small boats. On June 17, a couple used 0.3-ton motorless boat to defect, and on the morning of June 26, a family of three used a 1.7-ton boat to cross the West Sea 2.9 miles off the northeast coast of Baengnyeong Island.
