In the UK and colonies like Canada that accidentally became countries without ever deliberately intending to become independent, the word “royal” refers to matters of state, like the Royal Post, RCMP, etc. In the US we use it as a negative adjective, as in “all this wedding news is getting to be a royal pain.”

    I wish the US media would at least stop calling it “the” royal wedding. Every country with a monarchy has them.

    That the hoopla led to things like this in the US was quite galling.

    The royal wedding was news, to be sure, but not with the degree or duration with which even the American press presented it.

    That said, I have sometimes thought it would be interesting to bring back the Korean royal family. If we can figure out who they are.
