Death, Taxes, and Crime
Speaking of package deals, I’ve just about had it holding my head in my hands every time one of our guys in Korea screws up again. I’m not apologizing anymore. The fact is, if you invite 37,000 young, horny people into your country, and they happen to earn enough money to drown in soju, some of them are going to do stupid things. And no, recognizing that fact as inevitable is not excusing it. I’ve personally jailed my share of them.
Korea has an absolute right to expect us to discipline them when they fuck up. Korea does not have an absolute right to treat each and every such occurrence as if it were the Scottsboro case; we certainly didn’t react that way when a Korean anti-American nutcase stabbed an American doctor and father of five to death and got a measly 15 years for it. Incidentally, discipline follows a fair trial in the value system we’re there to defend. There is no such thing as a crime-free army. That, too, is a package deal.
