Slight of Hand

Funny, I seem to recall that last week, this election was a referendum on The War. Now that the results are in, the stealth doves who failed to fool enough of us red-staters to win the election can’t accept our answer. That leaves them spinning furiously to retroactively change the question and blunt the sharp tip of defeat. New party line alert: “It was all about gay marriage, and how Karl Rove used it to get all of us mouth-breathing...

Election Diary

Nov. 2, 7:00 A.M., the first of thirty-one hours that will end in Washington, fifty feet from the President of the United States. When the polls open, the line of voters is longer than the school itself. There are hundreds of people here, some with kids, some in business attire, in all kinds and colors. They read and make polite conversation about everything except politics as they move slowly toward the front of the line, where young volunteer election workers...

Today’s Theater of the Absurd

The NKHRA Makes Waves Korean press reaction to Bush’s signing of the NKHRA here, and the Unification Minister’s futile two cents’ worth of regret here. Now, the GNP (Grand National Party, South Korea’s “conservative” opposition) wants to get into the act. So they finally found their voice, now that the song is half over. And it’s a dirge. Meanwhile, the spigot on North Korean emigration has loosened another half-turn with only the second known successful defection by sea: Two North...

Wed All Love to See the Plan . . .

Just a thought: if you were to put a pistol to my head and ask me whether Kerry thinks invading Iraq was a mistake, you might as well throw some money on the table and call it Russian roulette, because I have absolutely no frigging idea. Shortly after he flubbed the last debate, Bush (or his advisors) encapsulated it nicely: He stated that Saddam Hussein was a threat and that America had no business removing that threat. Senator Kerry said...

Wenn Die Soldaten Auf Kaserne Sitzen

So much for Kerrys secret plan to end the war. France and Germany have made it clear theyre not playing: Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry conceded yesterday that he probably will not be able to convince France and Germany to contribute troops to Iraq if he is elected president. That leaves Kerry with the argument that he can win because . . . hes not Bush, which means hed bring new credibility and better judgment to the war effort....

Forgeries Fool the Media

The Sixty Minutes “exclusive” on Bush’s National Guard service (yawn) is the mirror image of the Swift Boat story–not terribly relevant to this, this, this, or even this, but a great indicator of how bad our news media have become. It’s a reminder of how tempting it is to believe something, if you want to believe it badly enough. The Sixty Minutes story appears to be based on a collection of fourth-rate forgeries. Look at the documents here, here, here,...

My Apologies; Blogging Has Been Light Recently

For now, check out this story in the NYT. Everyone seems to have concluded that diplomacy is failing to defang Iran and North Korea. The usual gang of Clinton holdovers is blaming us for not offering enough protection money. The Bush administration is now thinking covert action. Uh, good timing, guys. The basic premise is undeniable. Of course, to read anything in the Times these days you have to put up with plenty of completely gratuitous swipes at Bush and...

The Secret Plan to End the War

Argue all you want about the presence of al-Qaeda thug Abu Musab al-Zarkawi in Baghdad back when Saddam’s people were listening in on every living room in town. Insist, if you will, that neither this, nor the multiple con-fabs between the henchmen of Saddam and Osama, justified our being alarmed. Theres no doubt that Zarkawis there now, and that hes spearheading those who are killing our troopsand increasingly, a lot of Iraqi civilians. The simple truth is that today in...
