Terror By Remote Control?

I have long feared that this would be the future of terrorism. This time, it’s a terrorist organization hitting a military target. Hezbollah’s MO suggests that darker things are ahead.

Update: Not a UAV, but a missile, supplied by our “strategic partners” in China to Iran, and then to Hezb. Hopefully, this will put a lid on Israeli proliferation of US technology to China. More on Chinese proliferation to Iran, and what can be done about it, here.

  1. Looks like Hazbo boys with help from Iranian rev guards fired off land based Styx on Israeli FAC. PRC and DPRK sold the missles to Iran and they set-up their “own” production of otherwise 1960’s technology obsolete missile easily fooled with chaffs, flares and electronic countermeasure. This is the same joke missile DPRK shoots off once in a while off their coast in their vain attempt to increase range but without midcourse guidance over the horizen, not going to pose threat unless merchant ship.

Israeli crews were too relaxed and didn’t even turn the radar let alone countermeaure gear. Sad as first ever Styx hit was on Israeli destroyer in 1967 from port in Egypt…

  2. Duke, get your facts straight […]. The missile was not a Styx or even derived from the Styx. Current evidence suggests it is most likely a C-802.

    Quote from link http://sinodefence.com/navy/navalmissile/yj8.asp

“3rd Aerospace Academy (now CHETA) began to develop a new generation YJ-8 anti-ship missile in the early 1970s. Unlike the existing Chinese indigenous anti-ship missiles, which were all derived from the Soviet 544 (SS-N-2 Styx) anti-ship missile, the new missile was developed from scratch with certain Western influence.”

And how do you know the Israelis didn’t turn on radar or countermeasure gear? […]

  3. Yo Yu,
    […]

My “facts” came from AFP article early this morning. AFP as they often do revised the article to state the missile was C-802 (unlikely) instead of initial quote of C-102 and deleting rather embarassing statement for Israeli’s radar and electronic countermeasure turned off.

It’s highly unlikely Iranians gave more more modern C-802 acquired from PRC to Haz boys but their Styx variant Silkworm which they used extensively during wars in last 20 years and able assemble on their own thanks to PLA.

And by the way sinodefence is PLA sponsored PR machine despite their “claim” that it’s run by volunteers – [Chinese] in PRC not UK.

  4. Yo Yu,

Here is the AP article. Now get your facts straight […].

“And how do you know the Israelis didn’t turn on radar or countermeasure gear? […]

[…] An Israeli military official said the Spear’s missile detection and deflection system was not on during the attack, apparently because the sailors did not anticipate such an attack.

And the initial report this morning stated C-102 and not C-802.

  5. Other than the gratuitous slur and insults, not a bad discussion. Next time, if I feel lazy, I’ll just put then all in moderation. Argue without flames and slurs, please.

Initial reports were that this was a Hezbollah designed UAV. I’m frankly somewhat relieved, for reasons I won’t go into here.

  6. attacking a military target isn’t exactly terrorism, is it?
after all, the 2 sides are actually at real war.

if the target is civilian, then it would be. yes, i do know that many civilians targets were also hit in this conflict.

  7. Yo Yu,

Here is the original AP article I referenced.

It counters your immature attacks not to mention your amateur statements.

    1. “Duke, get your facts straight […]. The missile was not a Styx or even derived from the Styx. Current evidence suggests it is most likely a C-802.”

    Per AP:
“The intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information, said about 100 Iranian soldiers are in Lebanon and helped fire the Iranian-made, radar-guided C-102 at the ship late Friday.”

PS – It’s well known fact that Iranians assemble Styx variant Silkworm. PRC makes C-802.

    2. “And how do you know the Israelis didn’t turn on radar or countermeasure gear? […] ”

    Per AP:
“The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, said the missile detection and deflection system was not operating, apparently because the sailors did not anticipate such an attack.”

Get you facts straight before attacking others.

  8. “The attack on the warship off Beirut’s Mediterranean coast …..” from the link in the post.

note also the warship is off the coast of Beirut, i.e., in Lebanon soverginty water(? how many miles away) and most likely launching attacks to invade lebanon…..

  9. SB: note also the warship is off the coast of Beirut, i.e., in Lebanon soverginty water(? how many miles away) and most likely launching attacks to invade lebanon…..

Oh, I think the Lebanese are within their rights to use their coastal radars to help Hezbollah nail the Israeli destroyer, just as the Israelis are within their rights to invade Lebanon because its soil is being used to attack Israeli targets. Think of the Israeli action as being similar to the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in the 1970’s, without the deliberate Chinese execution-style massacres of Vietnamese civilians.

  10. Israel is trying to eliminate Hezbollah from Lebanon. Israel’s extensive attack against Lebanon must have been planned well in advance. If Syria or Iran intervenes, Israel may attack those countries with US support. Also, Israel wants to ruin Hamas.

  11. Israel is trying to eliminate Hezbollah from Lebanon…. Also, Israel wants to ruin Hamas.

You say that like those are bad things.

ZF, what’s your basis for saying the Lebanese Army radar assisted the missile attack? That would be an act of war.

  12. “You say that like those are bad things.”

What Israel is doing is not exactly good, either.
    Some of the reasons:
    1. The democratic government of Lebanon may collapse into civil war and chaos.
    2. The ‘Roadmap to Middle-East Peace’ that America has worked on for decades has been destroyed.
    3. Israel and the US have antagonized the rest of the world.
    4. The conflict can blow up into a bigger war, threatening the stability of the region.
    5. The Shiites are angry about the attack on Hezbollah, and they may retaliate against American troops in Iraq.

  13. Mihwa, it doesn’t surprise me to hear your ignorant post filled with disdain for anything USA supports. Your quixotic anti-american sentiments are now sprinkled with Al Queda supporting anti-semitism… You ought to stay within realm of Korea.

    To counter your viwes:

    1. Israel’s extensive attack against Lebanon must have been planned well in advance.
Oh really? What’s your basis for this accusation? Israel has right to defend its borders from TERRORIST (a lot like DPRK terrorist bombing in Burma and KAL flights in the late 80’s orchestrated by your midget hero Kim). Israel has all the right to root out Haz boys as Lebanese governement fail to do this per 2000 peace accord.

    2. If Syria or Iran intervenes, Israel may attack those countries with US support.
Syria and Iran are supporters of your dear midget aren’t they? Not to mention rogue customers of Scuds and Nodongs. They also support Al Queda and Haz TERRORISTs. Israel may resort to attacking Syria or Iran and they have the right as these rogue regimes support Haz terrorists. And you can bet that it’s all part of US war on terrorist. Get it?

    3. Also, Israel wants to ruin Hamas.
What’s wrong with DESTROYING TERRORIST HAMAS? Huh? Then again you knowtow to midget Kim who killed millions of his peoples and support terrorism.

All the while you enjoy the freedome in USA while attacking US policies… Typical leftist commies in Korea who are all eager to come and live in USA , country they despise. Yet you criminal suppoters won’t go live in worker’s paraside…

  14. ZF said ” Think of the Israeli action as being similar to the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in the 1970’s, without the deliberate Chinese execution-style massacres of Vietnamese civilians. ”

Huh? “execution-style massacres of Vietnamese civilians”? my understanding is that chinse army suffered severe casualty because viet-cong were successful in pretending to be civilians (and civilians are given weapons to fight as well) …. quite different than the lebanon situation.

as for israel attack killing civilians, see photo links here: http://www.zonaeuropa.com/200607.brief.htm#047

  15. sb: Huh? “execution-style massacres of Vietnamese civilians”? my understanding is that chinse army suffered severe casualty because viet-cong were successful in pretending to be civilians (and civilians are given weapons to fight as well) …. quite different than the lebanon situation.

Men in civilian clothing popping up with AK’s and RPG’s is actually what is happening to the Israelis in Lebanon. What the Chinese did involved execution-style killings of entire families. Colonel Yu of the Canadian Forces at a defense forum mentioned these Chinese atrocities some time back. These are not out of line – they’re actually pretty reminiscent of the kinds of things the CCP did during and after the Chinese Civil War. As to the link to your Chinese (with American citizenship, no less) compatriot’s anti-American website, I am having some difficuly accessing it, so perhaps you can provide a direct link to the source material.

  16. Roland Soong, whose website you referenced, is a good source for English-language translations of the National Enquirer- and Weekly World News-style material available in the Chinese press, though.

  17. @zf,

soong’s site links to yahoo news photos. i was just too lazy to copy all those links.

i am just pointing to some facts, in this case, photos of real people, taken by respected agencies (reuter, yahoo)

i do not like to use rumour of isolated case to insinuate and over-generalize. but do as you like, but that is just going to hurt your owen credibility.

    bye.
